About Us

Noctaves began as Lunaves — a weekend project that's still going fifteen years later.

Hardware came and went. RAM grew by an order of magnitude. The system was designed and redesigned more times than we care to count. Only the moon stayed the same.

Lunaves has gone dark more than once, and always come back a little brighter.

One of those sparks was Sonaves, which turned out to be simpler to implement in many ways — no moving parts, and nothing to keep trained on a moving target. And it puts names to birds, rather than counting shadows. However romantic the shadows might be.

And because both initiatives deal with the same question, we put them under one project: the Noctaves project.
